Healthcare in Kushtia: Challenges and Progress at the General Hospital

Kushtia district, a vital hub in the Khulna division, faces a complex healthcare landscape. The 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital remains the primary hope for millions, yet it constantly operates beyond its capacity. Often, the number of admitted patients is double or triple the allotted beds, forcing many to receive treatment on the floors of the wards.

While infrastructure is improving with the construction of the new Kushtia Medical College Hospital, the shortage of specialized doctors and technical staff persists. Residents of the district and surrounding areas like Meherpur and Chuadanga rely heavily on this facility. Rural health complexes in upazilas like Mirpur, Bheramara, and Kumarkhali are providing basic care, but critical cases are almost always referred to the central hospital, leading to further congestion.

Private clinics have flourished in the city, offering faster diagnostics, though costs remain a barrier for the average citizen.
